The Big Read gives communities the opportunity to come together to read, discuss, and celebrate world literature. El Dorado County has chosen The Call of the Wild by Jack London, for its Big Read. A variety of activities and events related to the book will take place in February and March, 2010. Why we chose The Call of the Wild: It is an unforgettable adventure story that appeals to young and old with its hero's gripping struggle for survival in a hostile environment. The themes of the novel - wilderness, survival, and the Klondike gold rush - echo the legacy of our community rich with its own gold rush history and tales of rugged explorers braving the wilderness to forge a new identity. "The Arts Council and our partners at the library are very committed to our communities. Along with multiple additional partners, we're planning El Dorado County's largest-ever book club. All of the events and activities will illuminate the connections between The Call of the Wild and our community," commented EDAC Executive Director Deb Jensen. "Wouldn't it be amazing if every citizen in the county read The Call of the Wild during our Big Read? That would make headlines!" The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. The NEA presents The Big Read in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and in cooperation with Arts Midwest.
